The Barren Sea by Beth Anne Lovejoy

 "There was a legend..."

In Haldia, there are girls who can charm the sea; they are called Navia. They are pledged to a patron who makes an offering to them, and in return, they then would protect at all costs through making offerings at the sea goddess.

Mila had already been rejected twice and has all her hopes that she will be chosen as Navia and find a Patron this time.

Finn is a Fae Cartographer from Whynne, Haldia's neighbour and enemy. Finn needs to find a boat to take him to Whynne when he becomes Mila's patron by chance.  She is excited and takes her duty seriously and finds a ship that will take him home, but the way home is through the Barren Sea, where ships are wrecked, and unknown creatures live. The heart of the legend of the sea goddess lies at the bottom of the Barren sea.

As Mila and Finn find their feet on the Silver Manatee under Captain Nikko, they realise they are both in deep trouble.  Finn has a secret that could cost him his life, and Mila has powers that Nikko wants to use for his benefit.

As they sail through the Barren Sea with the Haldian Fleet short on their tail searching for Mila, Finn and Mila must push past their feelings and try to stay alive.

Mila wanted adventure, but this one might not end as she had dreamed.

I love young adult fantasy as it captures the emotions and angst of the first moments of infatuation and dreams but combines it with the fantastical.  It is fantastic to read and find a new fresh, and intriguing story.  The Barren Sea definitely is a winner. I loved it.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
