When a routine surveillance mission goes wrong and the mark is brought back to her world, Black Spade, Charlie Saxe’s life is thrown into turmoil. She has always had to prove herself to the council and her adoptive Father the leader of the royal security guard in Counterpart and now she has not only her life on the line. As circumstances around her become tense and those whom she can trust become few, she has to balance her duty to Umbra against her loyalty to the royal household and her childhood friend.

Kav has been pulled out of his cushy high school life and thrown into the political drama of another dimension. Things are different but at least now he can come to know the girl he has had a crush on for the last couple of months. Plus, he is having the adventure of a lifetime.

Ace, the King of the Underworld grew up with Charlie, or as he calls her Little Lie. When she comes to him seeking safety he cannot help pulling her into his life again. He promises to help her, but accepting his help could put her in jail.

As Charlie has to make sense of the betrayal and lies she must discover the truth and decide where her loyalty lies as well as where her heart is heading. It cannot be good.

This is a good read and it contains an immense amount of information that will hold your attention until the book is finished.  There are however small instances where some knowledge about certain facts in the investigation is needed. Maybe the author could add some of this information in a foreword. If you know the words 'Please sir may I have some more, you also know who said it and which book.  Oliver Twist, to some, is the best known of Charles Dickens' books.  Yes, A Tale of two cities and Great Expectations are also well known but did not honour being made into a Disney Animated Film or a musical. As with many books, the title character is not always the one that people end up liking.  In the case of Oliver Twist , the Artful Dodger is the character that steals the show and how appropriate for Terry Pratchett to take this lovable character and give him the Pratchett makeover. Those of us who have read the Discworld novels and novels such as Nation  know that anything is possible once Pratchett has taken a character into his world.  For some, it might be disappointing to realize that there was nothing magical in Dodger .  That is to say nothing magical as in the Discworld novels.
