 Valtera, or the Emerald city, has been cursed to travel forever over the plains for over a century. Men may leave the city during the day only to disappear with it at twilight. Now someone is murdering citizens, and the people of Valtera have been placed in Calec of the Woods. Calec, a retired knight, has been living with his mate Serileen and the people of the Woods. Now he feels the need to travel again, and in this restless state, he is abducted by people from the Emerald city in the hope that he would help them break the curse they bore for burning a witch a century before. Calec must discover how to locate the vanishing city to help the people. He has to navigate the dangerous plains and their denizens, as well as the people of Valtera, who have their own secrets and motivations to either help or hinder him in his task. Will he succeed in Freeing Valtera and its inhabitants of the curse and restoring the once gleaming Emerald city to its original location? Schultz successfully combines the genres of fantasy and crime thriller in this fast-paced mystery of murders and a seemingly unbreakable curse. The story complements the character of Calec, who yearns to be able to travel and help people. Through his restless nature, he is always spurred on to go somewhere. Either to adventures away from his home in the Woods. Or back to the Woods to enjoy life with his mate. Although this book forms part of a series, it can be read as a standalone, and still enjoy it.

If you know the words 'Please sir may I have some more, you also know who said it and which book.  Oliver Twist, to some, is the best known of Charles Dickens' books.  Yes, A Tale of two cities and Great Expectations are also well known but did not honour being made into a Disney Animated Film or a musical. As with many books, the title character is not always the one that people end up liking.  In the case of Oliver Twist , the Artful Dodger is the character that steals the show and how appropriate for Terry Pratchett to take this lovable character and give him the Pratchett makeover. Those of us who have read the Discworld novels and novels such as Nation  know that anything is possible once Pratchett has taken a character into his world.  For some, it might be disappointing to realize that there was nothing magical in Dodger .  That is to say nothing magical as in the Discworld novels.
